If you are interested in helping preserve nature and the environment, than a Student Conservation Internship may be something you want to check out.

While both academic and financial benefits will vary depending on the type of SCA internship you apply for, there are a number of things you should consider.

Living Allowance

Students who are accepted for an SCA internship are given a basic living allowance, which typically covers food expenses only.

Interns may need to acquire additional money for recreational use and gasoline.

Travel Expenses

If you are worried about travel expenses (how you will get to and from the service site,) SCA provides modest travel expenses depending on the type of program you participate in.

For more information about travel expenses for both 12-16 week positions and 6-12 month positions, please visit their official website.

Housing

Typically, housing is provided to interns when they are accepted into an SCA program.

Depending on the internship, you may be provided an apartment to live in, a tent camp, a trailer or a bunkhouse.

Most housing is co-ed. Special requests to allow married couples and/or children to live together are usually impossible to grant.

Medical and Accident Insurance

All interns are given temporary accident and medical insurance while participating in an SCA program.

Depending on the type of program you participate in, insurance can be free or at a very reduced cost.

Loan Deferment

One of the best things about participating as an SCA intern is that you may be eligible to defer your qualified student loans.

In order to determine whether you are eligible for loan deferment, please contact the Student Conservation Association for more information.

Academic Credit

Eligible students may also receive academic credit for their participation as an SCA Intern.

They can receive credit for the hands-on education and professional training they receive while interning for the SCA.

If you are eligible to earn academic credit, a complete packet of information will be given to you that explain more about this.

AmeriCorps Education Awards

To qualify for an AmeriCorps Education Award, students must be accepted to an AmeriCorps SCA Internship program.

Additionally, students must be 17 years of age or older at the start of the position, a U.S. Citizen, and must graduate high school before they can use the award.

Awards are at least $1,000 dollars and can be used towards college tuition or loan repayment.

Participating in an SCA Internship is a unique way to earn college credit, as well as the possibility of receiving money to spend towards tuition costs or student loans.

Not only that, but students who participate in an internship will learn practical skills and receive hands-on training, skills that are invaluable in the work force.

If you are interested in participating in the Student Conservation Association internship program, please visit their website for a comprehensive FAQ sheet and an application.

There are a variety of program to choose from – have fun and best of luck to you.
