David W. Miller Award for Student Journalists

Apply to our collection of scholarship drawings!

Presented by the Chronicle of Higher Education, the David W. Miller award was created in Miller’s name.

Miller, tragically killed by a drunken driver at the age of 35, was a senior writer at The Chronicle. The award was founded in his name to help future generations of student journalists.

Offered annually, the award consists of a $2500 prize and a certificate. For deadline information, please visit the official website

There are a number of eligibility criteria students must meet before applying for the award.

First and foremost, students can reside in any country but submissions must be in English.

Submissions must have been appeared in a campus publication during the year in which you are applying.

Opinion essays, personal columns, scholarly or research papers and articles dealing with the student’s own research are not eligible for the award.

In order to apply, students may submit up to three writing samples of published work. Applicants must also include a 1-page letter stating why those samples were chosen for submission.

Please ensure each sample you submit is a journalistic piece that reports on a topic of interest to the intellectual community.

Submissions should use a variety of journalistic techniques, including expository, narrative, explanatory or other techniques to report the topic of interest.

Submitting multiple samples on a variety of topics can increase your chances of being chosen for the award.

Applications can be submitted via postal mail or e-mail. Please include with your application an address where you can be reached. Send submissions to:
