Avar Press Literary Essay Contest for College Students

Apply to our collection of scholarship drawings!

The Avar Press Literary Essay Contest is open to all United States and Canadian college students who are currently attending an accredited college or university at time of application. There is no application fee, and the contest is completely free to enter. Applicants will not be charged a reading fee for the scholarship committee to read their essays.

Unfortunately, the quality of the essays Avar Press received this semester were not up to par. Submissions have apparently reopened, but the website states to check back in the fall for topic guidelines and other deadlines.

However, there are a few general eligibility requirements that remain accurate as of this writing. Please ensure you follow the guidelines exactly, or you may be disqualified from the competition.

Entrants are limited to U.S. and Canadian college students worldwide. Affiliates of Avar Press in any way are not eligible to enter the competition.

The copyright of each essay belongs with the writer, whether the applicant wins or not. Avar Press will be unable to use the essay again without express written permission from the writer, minus one exception. Continue reading for further details.

Applicants should submit an essay with a minimum of 1,250 words but no greater than 1500 words on 8 ½ x 11” white paper. Please format your paper according to these specifications:

  • Times New Roman Font, Size 12
  • 1” Margins
  • Double Spaced
  • Include a Cover Sheet with the title of the paper; the applicant’s name and address and school name and address
  • Each page must include your name at the top left and the page number at the top right (starting with page 2.)
  • If you include a bibliography or footnotes, attach these as separate pieces of paper.
  • Staple entries together. Do not bind them in any other way.

In order to qualify for the essay contest, students must also submit proof that they are enrolled in an accredited college or university at the time of application. Additionally, applicants must submit a signed copy of the official rules (click the link above). If students are under 18, a parent must also sign a copy of the rules.

Entries should be submitted via postal mail to the following address (e-mail submissions are not accepted):

Avar Press

P.O. Box 1993

Whiteville, NC 28472
While the writer will retain copyright to his work, and essays will not be republished without written permission from the author, there’s one exception to this rule.

Winning essays will be published on the website after winning applicants have been announced. Thereafter, Avar Press can choose to use one or more of the winning essays in a future paper printing in whatever fashion they choose, so long as the writer(s) are attributed.

First place, second place and third place winners will each receive $500, $400 and $300 respectively.

If you are interested in applying, please visit their website. Additional information about deadlines and essay topics will be announced sometime in the fall.

  • 2008 Avar Press Literary Scholarship Competitions for College & High School Students

Complete details and application materials for the 2008 Avar Press Literary Scholarship Competitions are now available on our website www.avarpress.com by following the Xen Scholarships link.

All essays must be non-fiction and original work, analyzing any single aspect of D. J. Solomon’s Xen: Ancient English Edition, ISBN 0976066009, Avar Press, 2004. This satire, presented as a future “last testament of mankind,” is the story of a misanthropic scientist who rids the world of evil, marking the end of hate and prejudice. The use of the essay as part of the writer’s routine school work in any capacity is permitted.

The major changes since last year include the greatly increased size of the awards and the expanded eligibility criteria. Please note that the deadlines and supporting documents are different for the college and high school competitions.

The college competition deadline is January 31, 2008. All matriculated students, studying at any college or university in the world are eligible to enter. First, second and third place winners will receive US$1000, $750 and $500 respectively.

The high school competition deadline is May 15, 2008. All US and Canadian high school students who are members of the classes of 2008 or 2009 are eligible to enter. First, second and third place winners will receive US$1000, $750 and $500 respectively.

As in the past, the awards are made directly to the student.

If I can answer any further questions about the scholarships, please let me know.

    Sincerely,
    L. Melissa Kaufman
